A request for inspection or copies of public records can be made at any time. Any person has the right to inspect public records, unless the records are exempt. Records may be inspected by appointment only.

• Requests must be made in writing by person, email, mail, or facsimile.

• Copies must be paid for before the record(s) are released

• Requests may take (3) business days or longer. Requester will be notified when the record is available.

• Requests can be picked up, hand delivered, faxed, or mailed.

• Requests mailed outside of Jefferson County will require signature confirmation.

• Requests can be faxed only if paid for in advance.

There is no fee for inspecting records however, arrangements must be made with the custodian of records.

RELEASE OF REPORTS

ACCIDENT REPORTS

Collision reports are not subject to the Kentucky Open Records Act. KRS 189.635 limits the release of vehicle collision reports to the following:

  • The parties involved, or named on the report

  • The parents or guardians of a minor who is party to the accident

  • Insurance company

  • Any written designee of a party involved for insurance purposes

  • Attorney to a party involved

  • News gathering organization for broadcasting/publishing purposes only

  • Anyone producing a court order, subpoena, or a District or Circuit court clerk stamped complaint naming all parties

Collision Reports are $5 per report (excluding reconstruction case files)

Requests for photos/video will be directed to the Custodian of Records for approval.

OFFENSE / CRIME REPORTS

  • Social security numbers, juvenile information, telephone numbers and information of a sensitive nature (determined on case by case basis), may be redacted (removed) from the report before release

  • Investigative information may be released after the report is closed

  • Identity and identifying information relating to any sex crimes will be redacted.

  • Offense (crime) reports are available for release Monday- Friday 08:00 am - 3:00 pm

  • Requests may be directed to the Custodian of records in person, by email, mail or fax at anytime; but may not be processed for up to 3 business days.

  • Photos or other supporting documents are not automatically included and must be requested specifically
